I would take a wild guess on the way they divide up what processing power is sent to the cpu over the gpu. In games you can utilise the GPU for processing power as it tends to have far more cores than a CPU, so if they anticipate higher usage they've optimised the GPU to handle more than CPU.

Though research tells me it's due to having lower frame rates at higher resolutions. The more frames per second the more the CPU needs to work because it's being told to refresh more, so essentially being told to do more work.
